Why Design Conferences Matter
and Why They’re More Than Just Events

Design often happens at a desk. Between a screen, a sketchbook and a cup of coffee. And that is exactly why design conferences and festivals matter so much: they take us out of our daily routines and open us up to new perspectives.

I’ve been fortunate enough to attend the OFFF Festival in Barcelona, the AGI Open, and the cxi Conference. Three events that could not have been more different – and that’s precisely their strength. Each one was unique and inspiring in its own way.

Fascinating insights instead of buzzwords

Design conferences offer something that’s hard to come by online: genuine insight. Into mindsets, processes and attitudes. Whether listening to Stefan Sagmeister, Paula Scher, or Julia Hoffman from Google’s Creative Lab, the focus was never just on polished outcomes, but on the why behind them – the doubts, detours and decisions along the way.

Inspiration that lasts

Inspiration isn’t a short-lived spark. Real inspiration stays with you. It enriches your own work, sharpens your perspective and brings fresh impulses to projects that may have felt stuck. Often, it’s small ideas or single sentences that resurface later in your own design process.

Learning from others – on equal footing

Seeing how other design teams and creatives navigate their processes is incredibly valuable. Not to compare, but to learn from one another. Which methods work? Where do people experiment? How do they deal with failure? Design conferences create a space where this kind of exchange can truly happen.

Networking without pressure

Networking often sounds like business cards and forced small talk. In reality, the best conversations happen between talks, over coffee, or after the final session of the day. Connections that feel genuine – and often last well beyond the event itself.

Broadening horizons – professionally and personally

Design conferences don’t just expand your creative horizons, they expand you as a person. They challenge you, encourage you to grow beyond yourself and push you out of your comfort zone. Sometimes, all it takes is a shift in perspective to see your own work differently.

Out of the office, back into life

Perhaps one of the most important aspects: stepping away from the office. Away from the desk. Design thrives on encounters, movement and new impressions. Conferences and festivals remind us why we chose this profession in the first place.

Design conferences are not obligations – they are opportunities. Opportunities to learn, connect, get inspired and grow as a creative. And that’s exactly why they matter.
